Pope Francis’ visits to Congo and South Sudan have been postponed for health reasons, the Vatican said on Friday.
The Vatican break the news on its Twitter handle on Friday.
“At the request of his doctors, and in order not to jeopardize the results of the therapy that he is undergoing for his knee, the Holy Father has been forced to postpone, with regret, his Apostolic Journey to the Democratic Republic of Congo and to South Sudan,” Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni has said.
Papa Francis’s visit was scheduled for July 2 to July 7, however, this has been rescheduled to a later date that will be made public by the Vatican.
Pope Francis was expected to tour the Congolese cities of Kinshasa and Goma between July 2 and July 5 then travel to Juba from July 5-7 for two days in South Sudan’s capital.
Pope Francis, 85 years of age has been suffering from an inflamed ligament in his knee, limiting his ability to walk.
He is said to have been using a wheelchair during public appearances since last month.
